After the Scripps National Spelling Bee was cancelled in 2020, it came back with a bang in 2021! Zaila Avant-Garde, a 14 year old from Harvey, Louisiana scripted history on July 8, 2021 when she became the first African-American to win the title. She achieved this feat by correctly spelling "murraya" — a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees. She hopes to inspire more African American and Hispanic girls to enter into competitive spelling. In addition to her extraordinary spelling abilities on the big stage, she is also more than capable on the basketball court, highlighted by the fact that she holds multiple basketball related records in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Amazing Stuff Zaila!!
